Capital Pest Management treated 2 cases of bed bugs on the Gold Coast in the last week. Their is a misconception about bed bugs, some people associate bed bugs with filthy and cluttered homes or motels. Well, that is simply not true. Bed bugs are transported into homes/ accommodation by luggage or clothing. Bed bugs are world wide and even though they have been known to be located in family homes, apartments, schools, hospitals or even five star hotels, most cases they are found in budget accommodation where there is a high turnover of tourists, especially backpackers. These little critters are only tiny and can leave nasty looking bites as you can see in the images above. Some people have mistaken their bites for a mossie bite or flea bite. Usually Bed bugs come out at night to feed for approximately 3 to 5 minutes on human blood and then crawl back into its hiding place. Usually they typically feed on face, hands, arms, neck, ankles and areas where your skin is exposed. Even though we call them bed bugs, they are not only found in the mattress, bed head or linen of your bed, but also in areas such as furniture, wall coverings, skirtings, curtains ect. If you are not sure if you have bed bugs there are a few warning signs; such as blood stains on your bedding, darks stains on your sheets or possibly a sweet or musty smell in your room. If you are not sure, then it is always best to have a qualified pest controller to investigate, identify the pest, and treat if required.
